The Issue Of Authority And Res :: essays research papers

The issue of authority and respect has been and will be an ongoing issue between youngsters and their elderly. In the story Red Dress by Alice Munro and the movie Rebel without a Cause by Nicholas Ray the issue of authority and respect comes up many times through the character actions. Authority and respect is directly linked to one another. It is very hard to obey supremacy if you have no respect for authority. In both the works we have studied, all the characters have trouble dealing with the issues of authority and respect for themselves and for others, they do not show respect to their parents and therefore does not look upon them as authority figures.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In Alice Munro's the Red Dress, the narrator and her best friend Lonnie have two totally different relationships with their respective guardians. The narrator, without the mention of her father, is in care of her mother, whom she thinks butts in too much into her business. She sort of resents her mother for being so too close and nosy about her private life. Her mother's stories, which at one point seemed interesting to her, is now 'become melodramatic, irrelevant, and tiresome'. She knows that her mother only means well but sometimes she wishes she could be like Lonnie. Lonnie is in care of her father; her mother had passed away some time before. Her father never notices her and does not show his affection for her, she is pretty much on her own. The narrator considers her as a 'Blue-Baby' and privileged. The narrator also sees her mother as 'shameless and obscene'; she tries to direct her friend's attention away from her mother as much as possible. In the story, we are told by the narrator that she was 'never comfortable for a minute' in high school and 'was close to despair at all times'. She hated being called upon to do anything in front of an audience, whether it is the class or just the teacher. She reveals that she hasn't accepted herself as who she is, always wishing to be like someone else, she hasn't learned to respect herself as a growing teenager which makes it hard for her to understand the relationship between her mother and herself. Since she lacks the proper understanding and respect for her mother and herself, the narrator has trouble seeing her mother as an authoritative figure, which makes her less tolerant to the other authoritative figures in her surroundings.

Norwegian Whaling Essay -- Whaling Conservation Hunting Whales Essays

Norwegian Whaling Modern commercial whaling is continuously being over-exploited as whaling companies strive to maximize their profits despite international protest and a ban by the International Commission. Many various species of whales have been extinct, and the relatively few whales that remain are extremely vulnerable, and the factors that led to their over-exploitation in the past have not changed. Norway, one of the several countries involved in illegal whaling, has again refused to accept the international moratorium on whaling and has announced that its catch quotas for whales have risen. In 1995 Norwegian whales caught 217 whales out of a quota of 232. In 1996 the quota was 425. Now, on May 27, 1997 the whaling season will begin, and this year’s quota is increasing to some 700-800 whales. The rise is highly questionable especially due to the fact that 50 tons of whale meat from last year had to be frozen and put into storage due to the lack of demand. How many whales will be massacre this year just to be frozen? Recently in April, a Norwegian smuggler was caught in Japan trying to smuggle six tons of whale meat disguised as mackerel. Later it was discovered that the consignment was part of a conspiracy to smuggle a total of 60 tons of meat to Japan. The sale of whale meat can be a very lucrative net profit, considering that whaling companies make $10,000 for each whale captured. Japan is another country that exploits whaling for what they call "scientific analysis". However, the carcasses from this whale hunt are distributed to wholesalers and restaurants after this research is done on the whale. Japan remains the world’s largest consumer of whale meat, supplied in part by black market trade in species of mink... ...Norway, Japan, Iceland, and perhaps other unknown countries disregard all laws that protect whales from this world wide massacre. Fortunately, Greenpeace has been influential in creating a whale sanctuary in Antarctica and The International Whaling Commission has achieved a world wild moratorium on commercial whaling. However, we need to enforce these international laws more strictly, to prevent illegal killing and smuggling of whale meat for a business man’s moneymaking profit. Even though strict reinforcement may not cease the massacre completely, at least some whales will be saved and smugglers will be caught. Capital Punishment †Fair and Balanced Essay

Capital punishment is a difficult issue to address and has been the subject of highly controversial debates over the decades. The United States Supreme Court decided in Furman v. Georgia that the death penalty was a form of cruel and unusual punishment. However, just three years later in 1975, the Supreme Court reversed their decision, and executions resumed under state regulation. The death penalty is considered the harshest from of punishment enforced today. The most common method used to implement this task is lethal injection; although, the electric chair is still used in some states. The large debate over the death penalty comes from liberal fanatics who use deception and falsehoods to further their cause. Supporters of the death penalty consider capital punishment the only way for true justice to be executed for the severest of crimes. Supporters also claim criminals that commit such harsh crimes, including murder and rape, deserve to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Preventing future crimes and deterring criminals from committing such harsh acts also play key roles in support of the death penalty. Concrete proof of deterrence alone is not a valid reason for capital punishment, nor is it the underlying principle in use by astute death penalty advocates. Criminals ought to be punished for their crimes committed and not merely to deter others. That said however, the death penalty unquestionably â€Å"deters† the murderer who is executed. Strictly speaking, this is a form of incapacitation; similar to the way a robber put in prison is prevented from robbing on the streets. Vicious murderers must be eliminated to prevent them from murdering again, either in prison, or in society if they should get out. Both as a deterrent and as a form of permanent incapacitation, the death penalty helps to prevent future crime. The argument against capital punishment relies on myth, propaganda, and misplaced emotion. Many people against the death sentence claim that the justice system is discriminatory. This statement is blatantly false. African-Americans and other minorities are not impacted unfairly by the justice system. The fact of the matter is the majority of those executed  since 1976 have been Caucasian males. If the death penalty is truly discriminatory, then it is biased against white murderers and not blacks, because figures show that African-Americans make up a majority of those convicted of murder. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, blacks committed 51.5% of murders between 1976 and 1999, while whites committed 46.5%. The latest of hate crime laws are likely to only exacerbate the hypocrisy. A â€Å"hate crimes† frame of mind translates into tougher sentences for interracial crimes. Since Caucasians are killed by African-Americans 2.6 times more often then the other wa y around, more killers of Caucasians will be predisposed to receiving the death penalty.Finances are also argued frequently on the topic of capital punishment. â€Å"It costs more to execute a person than to keep him or her in prison for life. A 1993 California study argues that each death penalty case costs at least $1.25 million more than a regular murder case and a sentence of life without the possibility of parole† (Deathpenalty.org). This statement deserves no response, because the figures are not perfect, and are dubious at best. Nevermind the fact that justice should not be up for sale. Serving justice is not about saving money, and should not be treated as if it were an item being contracted, trying to get the â€Å"lowest bid.†Retribution is an additional reason for capital punishment, which some opponents of capital punishment confuse with vengeance. As a sound principle of natural law and common sense, the punishment should fit the crime. For example, if someone had been convicted of the assassination of the president, and the judge had sentenced him or her to only five years in prison, the nation would have been pr operly outraged. Having a fit punishment for the crime committed has been around since the beginning of civilization. Hammurabi’s Code of Law, developed long before the birth of Christ, claims retribution as, â€Å"an eye for an eye, life for a life†. Retribution makes capital punishment justifiable because it is an injustice to tolerate such unimaginable horror. If one commits a crime, he or she should be ready to accept the consequences. Murder is a crime that involves the loss of innocent life, and that act needs to be rightly punished. Murderers should not receive an overextended welcome in a prison. Those who commit these serious offenses do not belong in society. Realistically there is no solid argument against the death penalty. If society were to take capital  punishment away, the public would not have an effective justice system and crimes against innocent people would continue. Opponents of the death sentence need to accept the fact that capital punishment is fair and just. Using lies and deceit will only go so far. The people of this country are smart enough to realize the difference between fact and fiction, and the truth is capital punishment works.

There is an ashes fixed in the minds of people, a perfect frame which is as fair as them and they view everyone by means of this frame but when the speakers picture comes into the frame the frame slips. Her picture is not unsloped replete for the frame like they cant accept someone like her, someone from the minority and that she is not unattackable enough to be with them not good enough to be called as their own. They see someone who is not tuned with them, someone who is not like them, someone who is from a diverse world, someone like a ghost. The speaker hopes that whatever she has verbalize so far shoots through the thick spirit level of stereotypes the community has set and the noise of repression of the community. So whole carrying on with this life of hers, the speaker comes across a person who is terra incognita to her yet there is something or so the person that makes her feel like she bashs him or her.The face of the person is pure and simple without any mask of stereotypes. The speaker can very read through the persons face and his or her outcast eyes . She comes to a acknowledgment that the person is like her a minority. She comes to a realization that she is not completely the one who is an outcast, one who has no place to call home and one who is a foreigner wherever she goes. It gives speaker some hope to know that she doesnt stand alone. The poem reflects the life of the poet herself. While she visits India people view her as a visitor and also because she is a Muslim, who come under minority in our country. On the other hand when she is in horse opera countries people view her as an immigrant. The poem gives us an idea intimately the feelings of people belonging to minority. Theyll say She essential be from another(prenominal) country The poem, theyll say She must be from another country is also written by Imitiaz Dharker. The poem is a sharp critic on various forms of exploitation that are carried in India as well as in various parts of world. The poem is to the highest degree how people of the world cant come to te rms with a person who is liberal and expand-minded. The poet has criticized old and handed-down minds. The poem gives various indirect references to racial discrimination, realm repression and curbing the right to granting immunity of expression. We convey examples of painters like MF Husain and writers like Salman Rushdie who were opposed at different generation due to their work. The poet talks approximately them indirectly without mentioning their names. Numerous films find been opposed just because they clash with some minds. The speaker is a female as it is clearly state in the poem and as well as the tittle. In country like India or any other country for that matter, not everything is welcomed open mindedly.Pieces of literature and art which are instal to be foetid are taking down while not looking or audition what the creator of the gainpiece wants to say about it. Whether he she really means any offence to particular religion, group of people and if he or she wan ts to hurt any sentiments. There are some traditional and Jewish-Orthodox minds that do not seem to respect freedom of expression. In straightaways ever changing and innovational world lines like right to freedom of speech and expression are only to say but in creation this things are not welcomed.Certain anti-social minds cipher they are protecting their identity or uplifting the interests of their religion or community. But this is not true. They are just not bold enough to take whatever falls on their ears even if it is the truth. So as the speaker says books are burnt-out and paintings are taken down. Just because the thoughts verbalised in those pieces of work clash with the Jewish-Orthodox thinking. Sometimes even the educated minds do this. Of course all are open to say whatever they want but I think it can be done in a crack way other than taking down the books and the paintings. This people arent mature enough to accept ideas which come across them. We have numerous examples of books which have been banned. They condemn the pieces of master pieces to dust when a particular piece of art is found disturbing. Art is show in different ways. Every artist has his or her own style of expressing their ideas on a paper. Not all bare pictures of Gods and Goddesses are painted to tarnish a particular religion. We need to look through the artists eye to understand them to understand the beauty of it. Burning the work isnt going to help. There are cases in our country when artists were forced to pass the country. Whenever this happens we lose these valuable masterminds. Then the speaker also talks about films which are banned. Whenever films are released on controversial topics, there are people who oppose their application and in most of the cases even term of enlistment them from getting screened. They vandalize the cinema houses and exterminate the property if their demands are not met. When the speaker questions such way she is told that she must be from another country. It indirectly indicates that this type of appearance is not going to stop and that it happens often. There are times when a person is criticized due to the language and accent. They point it out and explain it the way it should be spoken and theyll say she must be from another country. The speaker further says when she walks with her head teacher up, with dignity, irresponsible respect they criticize. As being a woman they expect her to keep her head down and walk as if shes some less of the person. When the speaker wears table cloth to go to town, it means when she wears different type of clothes like voguish clothes she is condemned. Even today i8n certain places women are not allowed to wear western outfits. The speaker says there is discrimination on the basis of colour and sexual taste of a person. If any Indian or Asian goes in western countries, they are often discriminated on the basis of their skin colour. The speaker also says that, if a perso n is gay then he or she is not accepted in troupe by the orthodox minds. Hence when they see a black person or a gay they whisper to each other that he or she doesnt belong here. The speaker further adds about how there is a huge cranny between a country like India and other western countries like the wide Britain. They find the speakers habits disgusting. Such as eating olives and spitting out the pits, peeing outside. These people belong to a sophisticated place and hence do not like such things. The mention of Bombay shows that she is clearly talk of the town about India. The places like opera are meant for serious minded and elite naval division of society. So the speaker says when she yawns in opera and laughs, they do not like it. They say very sadly and with disgust that she is same as rest and does not belong here.So due to all this un-acceptance she receives everywhere, the speaker says that maybe there is a country foe all the freaks like herself. By freaks she means t he liberal minded people who are considered as freaks by the orthodox minded people. This are the people who do not owe any inscription or loyalty to the old dilate fools who wear the uniform. By this she does not unavoidably mean the police. It means all those people in power and influence. According to her they are the one who act like crooks and thugs and take away the rights of people when they are the ones speculate to protect the interests of people. The people with power reverse anyone who comes in their way and by doing so they break the same rules which they are supposed to abide by. Further the speaker says the country is just for namesake and to her and other people like her it doesnt look like a country at all. There are cracks all over and people like her live behind the backs of those who rule with their deplorable power. There are divisions and this is tearing up the country. So the words like field integration and universal brotherhood look good only in books a nd pages. The speaker has never understood this eccentric behavior and is at peace with it. She is happy that she is not associated in any way with the productive old fools and happy that she remains an alien to the customs and traditions. She readily accepts the tag of outsider. She accepts that she then belongs to a different country which in all likelihood doesnt exist. A country where freedom is put down and chained in every way possible. The two poems are related to each other. In both poems the person is made to feel different and unwanted and in the end somehow in both poems the speakers have found some hope and solitude.
